About Program

The M.A. and Ph.D. in English Studies is an innovative program recently established by the English Department, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat. The program is designed to provide a high-quality and flexible South-East Asian international alternative for M.A. and Ph.D. English Studies. After studying our core courses, students in both the M.A. or Ph.D. program elect to follow a course of study that focuses on one of three main tracks, depending on their particular interest:

  • Applied Linguistics (particularly for those who are interested in English language teaching or English for specific purposes)
  • Intercultural Communication (particularly for those who work for international organizations or multinational companies or those with a need to communicate effectively in an international environment)
  • Literary Studies (particularly for those who want to gain new insights into literary studies such as language and style, language and voice, and applications of literary studies on translation and language creativity)

Location: Thammasat University, Tha Prachan Campus

Number of admission: 25 students (M.A. / M.A. continuing to Ph.D.); 10 students (Ph.D.)

Study time: Saturdays and Sundays

Admission periods: December to March

Exams and interviews: April

Announcements of successful candidates: Late April-May

Academic semesters: Semester One: (June – September); Semester Two (November – February)

Types of admission

  1. M.A. only: Plan A (Thesis; 5 semesters) / Plan B (Independent Study; 4 semesters)
  2. M.A. with an option to continue directly to the Ph.D. Program (M.A. students who wish to continue to the Ph.D. Program must choose the Thesis Plan, and at the end of the third semester will be required to pass a Ph.D. assessment exam. Those who are successful can start their Ph.D. in the fourth semester without having to complete an M.A. thesis). The total study period for this type of students is 11 semesters.
  3. Ph.D. only (8 semesters)

Qualifications:

For M.A./ M.A. continuing to Ph.D.

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in any field with the minimum GPA of 2.50 (out of 4) or equivalent.
  2. Strong command of English (see details of the required English test scores below)

For Ph.D. Program

  1. A Master’s degree in any field with the minimum GPA of 3.25 (out of 4) or equivalent.
  2. Strong command of English (see details of the required English test scores below)

English Proficiency requirements:

Candidates must have a working knowledge of the English language, having obtained one of the following scores from a recognized testing institution.

* TOEFL (Paper-based) no less than 550 ; or
* TOEFL (Computer-based) no less than 213 ; or
* TOEFL (Internet-based) no less than 80 ; or
* IELTS no less than 6; or
* TU-GET no less than 550


Approximate Expenses (in Thai baht)
M.A. (Thesis) about 220,000 (Thai citizens) or 285000 (for international students) ;
M.A. (Independent Study) about 200,000 baht (Thai citizens) or 250,000 (for international students)
M.A. continuing to Ph.D. about 666,000 baht (for Thai citizens) or 820,000 (for international students)
Ph.D. about 550,000 baht (for Thai citizens) or 663,000 (for international students)
